Hi Jim,
Birmans do have a lovely temprement, and are also very beautiful to look at!
However, they are considered to be a medium/longhair coated cat. The difference between Birmans and other breeds is that Birmans have more of a 'wool' coat, as opposed to a fur. This means that when you pet a Birman, the fur doesn't come flying away in your hand quite as much as say a persian or a chinchilla would.
Having said all of that, there is no guarantee that a Birman won't cause an allergy in someone that isn't usually allergic to cat hair. If you are interested in a Birman, why don't you and your girlfriend visit a breeder of Birmans and see if just being around the cats gives her any troubles.
Best of luck!

: I've read about these cats, and I think I'd like to get one eventually (temperment and they are just plain cute), but I need to know how they are in the allergen department.
: My girlfriend is mildly alergic to cat dander (but not hair), and I need to know if this is a safe breed to get.
: Any suggestions?
