She may be tearing up the carpet because she is bored. Have you considered buying one of the larger scratching posts/gym type things? This might do the trick. There is also a "treat ball" that will distribute a little treat every now and then when it is pushed around. I understand those are supposed to help with boredom too.

Meanwhile, cover the carpet with foil. That will often deter the scratching. Or try Feliway. Check it out at www.Feliway.com
