Cats don't go outside their box for no reason. (The reason might not make the best sense to us, but there is always a reason.) Cats are fairly neat creatures and most of them would prefer to neatly use the box....unless they feel there is a good reason not to. Since we want the action to stop, it's up to us to find out the reason behind the action and then make a change.

Getting the additional litterbox was a good idea, but don't put her nose in her mess. As you said, it's not going to help, she doesn't know why you're doing it, and it could very well lead to a cat that is nervous about the litterbox and relieving herself in general. This could lead to worse problems. Yes, believe it, it could be worse! =)

One cause could be irritable bowel syndrome. It can cause this problem and it's especially suspect when the BM's are right around the litter box. Anyone who knows about IBS can tell you it's quite uncomfortable, can go away and return, and can be helped with medication. She needs to go to the vet (take a stool sample with you from one of her outside-the-box incidents).

Look for the reason! Part of the looking can be checking out the consultation that was recommended here, after ruling out medical cause. Good Luck with her!

:Our cat, Tasha, has recently, out of the blue, decided that she will no longer deposit solid matter in the litter box, only urine. We have cleaned the box, used different type litter, put a little towel outside (it worked for a while), paper outside, installed yet another litter box. Nothing works. Putting her nose in it didn't help (or hurt further) Help!
