Vacuum regularly. Groom your cat in one specific area, then clean well. Bathing the cat on a monthly basis might help, too. Most people who are allergic are sensitive to a protein in the saliva that is on the cat's fur after grooming. If he is not having severe reactions, perhaps he will develop a tolerance for a certain level of "cat spit".
I saw an article in the newspaper recently citing that athsmatic children who were raised with pets developed antibodies over time and had less severe athsma problems as adults. Another option might be for your SO to look into the desensitization shots. Many people have said these take time, but do work.
