:Hi. I have a 3 year old cat named Keeble who I have been thinking about declawing. I currently have 2 cats, Keeble and an older cat who is declawed (but by someone else before my husband and I got him). I truly don't believe in declawing and was wondering how others feel on this issue. I had job shadowed at a vet's office one time after the surgery of a cat having his claws removed and saw the poor little thing in the cage with his paws all bandaged up. Keeble constantly scratches on the furniture and my husband and I just stomp our feet and tell him "NO." We don't have the best of furniture right now and don't plan to change to NEW FURNITURE until we find our 1st new home. We don't want Keeble to ruin our new furniture so does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks! And has he gotten too old (so to speak) to have him declawed now?

Hi,
Now would be a good time to start training your kitty to use a scratching post. Get a good quality scratching post. You might need to try more than one kind to see what he prefers. Cardboard scratching ramps are good, too. Put the scratching post next to the furniture and put aluminum foil or double stick tape on the furniture. Pet stores sell a product called "sticky paws". It is very thin and hardly shows on the furniture. Cats don't like the feel of foil or tape under their feet. If your cat likes catnip you can rub some catnip on the scratching post or put some treats on it. Praise the kitty when he uses the post instead of the furniture. You might want to consider using "SoftPaws" while you are training him to use the scratching post. These are small covers that fit over the claws so they don't do as much damage when they scratch. You should get them from your vet first so s/he can show you how to apply them. After that you can buy them online.

Hope this helps. Good luck.:)

Sue
