It's not easy to put a cat on a diet. One major problem is that when you cut the calories severely, it can cause other problems, like heart and liver damage, this is especially true for overweight cats. A cat's calorie intake should never be reduced more than 10% to 15%. You didn't indicate if you free feed. Often introducing a "diet" food won't work well because the cat just eats more of it. You might want to try set feedings, morning and evening, with a measured amount of food and increasing the cat's activity with a few short play sessions. It make take quite a while to see any significant weight loss, but slowly the cat will lose the excess weight and build more muscle.
