He's probably pushing your buttons to a degree. He may also be looking more for your attention when you come home than for food. The canned foods are a lot stronger smelling than the dry foods. Do you offer him a small amount in a dish or on a paper plate after you've opened the can? Canned food isn't essential if he's getting a balanced and complete dry food and drinks ample water. Perhaps offer him a different treat like a small piece of cooked meat or a commercial dry treat. I know a number of the cats like treats called Moobits and Baabits that are a jerky like product.
