We have an elderly cat (19 years old) and he has become a very messy eater. We feed him canned food because he seems to have problems with dry food. He takes mouthfuls of the canned food from his dish and puts it on the floor to eat it. Problem is he does this many times during a meal and puts in many places, which causes him him to step in it and track it around. We have put paper under the area but he takes it beyond the paper. This is really a problem because it looks messy, he tracks it on the carpeting and the area has to be washed many times a day. Has anyone else ever had this problem with their cat. Our other female cat Daisy died one year ago at age 18 and never did this.
It sounds like your cat is having a difficult time eating. Has the vet checked his mouth and teeth lately? Often times dental problems will make it hard for the cat to pick up food or chew it. Some things you might try in the meantime are raising the food dish off the floor several inches or using a ground food and mashing it up so there are not large chuncks for him to take out of the dish.
Good luck! Let us know how he's doing!
