I think you have the right idea with the kitten. They usually do need smaller but more frequent meals until they're about 4 to 5 months old. The kitten foods do contain more protein and fat than the regular adult foods and probably quite a bit more than the "lite" foods, so if your older cat is getting a bit of kitten food it is undoing all the hard work. Keeping them separated when you feed and not leaving extra food out is probably the best you can do when you have two with different needs.
