Cat over salivating when eating

Help please...

I have a beloved 8 yr old male tabby who over salivates when he eats and it sounds like he is going to choke. He eats dry food but awhile back he tried to drink some cream in a bowl and nearly did choke to death. He has no trouble drinking water and is healthy and playful. I am concerned it is getting a little worse. Any suggestions. I asked my vet about it last spring and she seemed unalarmed and said keep him on dry food.

Thanks!
