:I am a psychiatric nurse. Amitryptilline is the generic name for Elavil a mood elevator. I haven't seen it used much if at all in the past 10 years at least on humans. 10 mg. is a dos that is used on some adults!!! Never mind a cat! Personally, I don't believe that there has been enough research done on these drugs and animals to produce acurate results of long term effects. Many of them have detrimental effects esp. on the liver. Of course your poor cat was knocked out! That's the 1st effect of Elavil! Plus, in humans it takes a minimum of 2 weeks (usually 3-4) before there are any noticeable results. This stuff horrifies me and I believe these meds (Prozac is another so often used on animals) are nothing but a quick fix or a vet that doesn't know what else to do. I aplogize formy anger but this stuff just plain drives me nuts! (and I should know, shouldn't I? LOL!) My suggestion is to get your cat off Science Diet altogether!
:Give him a food that contains "human grade" meat and NO preservatives. (I believe Wellness, Sensible Choice and a food put out by Dick VanPatten are some of them). There are chemicals in SO many of the commercial pet foods out there that cause toxic reactions in our pets tat they need to be "detoxified." Add cooked chicken, raw chicken, raw ground turkey, hamburger,eggs to your cat's food- jst a little at a time. It does wonders for them! I've done it, I know what psitive results these foods can have. If you want you can email me directly and I will be more than happy to get as much info as I can for you. I just want to say thank you after the frist day we only gave him a half for about 4 days then we said enough of that.I then tried desolving it in water and rubbing it on the spots where he licked it still seem to make him sleep a lot.Them I tried a little pepper you know what it works just as well and my cat still hasn`t got hair on his belly but he is playing and being the boss just the way we like him.I would sure like more information please email me at :kathbrian@islandtelecom.com and thanks again Betsy`s mum
