Congratulations on your new furkids! I don't have Maine Coons so I don't have all the answers, but here's a few ideas:

1.It is normal for cats to hiss at each other. It's just their way of saying, "Get out of my space!" As long as there is no physical fighting going on, this shouldn't be a problem.

2. If you watch the cats very carefully for a few days, try to notice who sits or lies in the "choice" places first. Also see who gets to the food first. Does one hiss more than the other? Then she may be the dominant one. There are degrees of domanance so they may be pretty equal in the scope of things.

3. As for the toilet paper roll, you can do several things - one is tie a ribbon around it. Two is put a cup (unbreakable) of marbles on top of the roll. When the cat starts to unroll it, marbles fall all over and usually this discourages the behavior. You'll probably just have to be sure envelopes are out of reach, as well as plastic items. Plastic is dangerous and some cats do have an attraction to it!

4. How much space do you have for a litterbox? Sometimes a small child's wading pool can really do the job. Some people also put the litterbox in the bathtub, then clean up the mess before they bathe. I found that putting old towels/rugs under the box reduces tracking and also if they get soiled they can be removed and washed fairly easily. I prefer the clumping litter myself, however it will also track and is more frustrating because the grains are very small.

:I just adopted two Maine Coons at the Humane Society and have questions about a couple of things. I've only had one cat before(Maine Coon mix) and she lived to be 16. She was the IDEAL cat. Never had any problem with her. The new girls are litter mates, females, 6 years old, and they weigh 12 lbs. each(the 'angel cat' weighed only 6 lbs.). I'm going through multiple cat adjustment as well as huge-cat adjustment. They are so sweet and we bonded in minutes...but I need some advice. 1. Is it normal for them to hiss at each other sometimes? They don't do it often, but I don't know when they are playing or serious. 2. I haven't figured out who is the dominant cat either. How do you tell? 3. One of them likes to pull the toilet paper off the roll and I think she's eating the paper...and she licks envelope flaps. 4. The other one goes in the closet and chews on the edges of plastic clothes bags and I caught her chewing on the edge of the plastic trash bag in the trash can. I don't think she's eating it but I'm afraid she will....more dangerous than the tissue paper! 5. What do I do about them getting litter EVERYWHERE? They kick it out of the box and sometimes they miss the box...they are big and I think that's why... I bought a large litterbox. And I don't think they'll like the covered box. Any suggestions? Also, I've never used anything except old fashioned litter...Is the scoopable really better? I change the litter every other day and sometimes every day if it's dirty.

:Thanks for any advice...on these questions and any helpful hints on raising Maine Coons. They are so COOL, I just want to keep them happy!!!
