Try leaving a radio on during the day when you are gone. There are also automatic treat balls that you can set to start rolling and drop treats while you are gone. On the deluxe ones you can even record your voice calling the cat's name! For sure keep your petting contact minimal with this cat since it seems to stem from too much contact. You might be interested in checking out the link I've provided below. Ask your vet about the possibility of some sort of antianxiety medication. Sometimes the cat will "unlearn" the fear or whatever is causing the aggression while on the meds, then they can be gradually withdrawn.
You have had some good advice here. Apparently you have had the cat to the vet about this problem, so I guess there is no medical reason for this. It is probably boredom and loneliness that is bothering your cat.
