Is there anything I can do to help him cope with the limited space (I've been experimenting with toys already), or do you think he'll eventually adapt to the smaller space?
I think he will eventually get used to the smaller space, although it will take a while, perhaps a couple of years! I have a cat I brought in from the outside and he still gets the urge to go even though it's been four years! He is much calmer, but he definately has his "wanna go OUT" moments still. One other thought - on this site you occasionally see an advertisement for a cat jacket. Some cats adapt to these very well. This would be a way you could safely escort him outside. I've been thinking about ording one for mine. The URL is www.safkat.com. Here is my cat yearning to go out and meet a certain outside kitty. Sad to say I am an interferring parent and the romance will not be allowed to blossom!
I think some good healthy play sessions will help - also if you can get one of those cat trees and put it near a window he might enjoy having a "bird's eye" view of the outside and inside.
