Tell your vet about the night-crying when you go in. He/she may have some ideas about this other than what I can offer you. Some people say that night-crying is because the cat is getting senile and forgets where she is and where her people are. Have you tried just holding her and petting her when she starts this behavior? My cat did this and if I sought her out and picked her up she'd quiet right down. I'd bring her to bed with me and put her on the cover beside me. BTW, the other theory is that the cat is become deaf and that the meowing acts as a "sonar" or echo device so the cat can figure out where she is. I do know that my cat became quite deaf before this behavior started. Good luck to you and to your cat.
This night crying is very common in older cats. Definitely the vet visit is a good idea. You'll want to have a full blood work-up done - be sure that kidney function and liver function are checked out along with thyroid.
