Yes, cats are very tuned into human emotions. They may not know quite what is going on, but they can sense a mood change, perhaps better than another human.

Cats are tuned into body language since that is how they communicate. They can also hear a change in the tone of your voice or the pattern of your speach. They can also smell chemical changes brought about by mood swings in your body. It's these super-sensitive traits that can cause a cat to react to different human moods. By NOT relying on what you are saying with your lips, they are better able to figure out what you are saying with your body.
