A few things i use to help me navigate, maybe they will be helpful to you:
If I have reached the end of the followups on a thread, I click the link at the bottom to take me back to the forums other messages.
If I want to look at another forum, I scroll to the top of the screen and click on the Forum/Message Board link there. Takes you back to the main forum page.
After I post a followup or message, I click on "Take me to my message" link. That way my message shows up as read next time I look at the list.

Hope this helps you navigate the boards a little easier.
