Good for you Ellen! These cats definitely need our help and even though you only 4 or so, there are most likely more around....or will be if they are not trapped and speutered!
I'll tell you what my rescue did to start managing the colony we do. Each day at a set time, 2 volunteers (the same two all the time if possible)would go out and set plates of food out and then go sit in the car or a nearby location to watch what cats would come to eat. Before too long, the ladies only had to call the cats and they knew that food was coming and would gather around. They would, of course, remain under a bush or behind a retaining wall until the women walked away from the food. A few of the younger ones who were a bit braver would venture out to feed as the volunteers were still placing food out. Within a few months, we were able to set traps out and lure the cats with sardines or some other really smelly food. Then they would be spayed/neutered and have their ears notched so we knew which cats we had already done. We also had some handyman build shelters for the cats which we placed in secluded spots so that the cats had some place to get out of the wind and cold. We have lost some cats to Felv, but we innoculate them against it once we catch them. If we catch any that we think can be socilaized, we put them into foster care and then find good homes for them. I, myself, have 2 former feral cats that are now a treasured part of the family.
Good luck with your endeavors. These kitties are lucky they have someone who wants to help them. :)
Purrs,
Munchie
