About fostering...

Well, with the exception of the hosts, I will be the first to post on this board. I'd love to hear from others who foster, get their ideas and insights, learn from their successes AND mistakes.
I will tell a bit about what I'm doing.
After reading an article in one of my cat magazines about fostering, I went to our shelter to inquire. They welcomed me with open arms. It seems that there are never enough foster homes for the number of animals. That was 2 1/2 years ago. Since then I have fostered a few adult cats, several kittens "on their own" and 7 litters of kittens with their mom cats. Some of the kittens have been born here, some were 1 or 2 days old when they came. I have become passionate about fostering. I get my "kitten fixes" without having my own kittens all the time (although I did keep one from the first litter I fostered).
I am learning more with each cat/litter of kittens that I have.

I rearranged things in my home in order to turn my smallest bedroom (9X10) into the foster room (in which now reside 9 kittens and a mom cat). With the single exception of a small night stand with 2 drawers, good for holding some kitty necessities, there is no human furniture in that room; only a cat tree and a few condos, cat dishes, cat boxes and lots of toys. In 2 days people are coming to remove the carpet (now very soiled despite my constant scrubbing) and put down vinyl flooring.
This summer I attended a conference at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, and in working with kittens saw a wonderful idea they had done in their kitten rooms which I am going to have my floor people do. Instead of taking the vinyl to the baseboard, they are going to remove the baseboards and run the vinyl up the wall all around about 6 inches. The corners will be caulked. This will prevent any "spills" from getting under the baseboards and into the floor and wall.
Well, that's what I'm up to. I'd LOVED to hear what some others are doing.
Norma
