Kudos to you for going to the shelter for a cat. You are saving a life! :)
I volunteer for a local rescue group and we hand out some informational packets that help new adopters successfully bring a cat into their home. The best thing to do is set up a room for the cat with litterbox, bed, food and water bowl and some toys. Get the cat used to you before letting him out of the room and then gradually let him explore the house before introducing him to the dogs. Once the cat is comfortable with his new surroundings and knows the places to hide if he should feel in danger from the dogs, then you can introduce them with supervision at all times in the beginning. Even though your dogs have been around cats before, you don't know how they will react to THIS cat. Never leave them unsupervised until you are absolutely certain the dogs will not harm the cat. One thing we also advise is to put several litterboxes around the house until the cat has been there awhile and is really used to the house. Then you can take one away each week until you are down to the one box in the one place you want it be. This helps avoid any problems should the cat "get lost" in his new home and not remember where his box was.
Good luck to you and your new kitty. Hmmm..since you have 2 dogs, maybe you might consider getting 2 cats???? Okay....being in the rescue field, I had to try. ;)

:I am thinking about getting a cat from my local shelter. I have never had a cat before. I wanted to know if there is anything I should do especially since I have two big dogs. Both of my dogs have been aroung cats before and they pretty much ignore them, so I'm not too worried. But I want to know if I should bring them to the shelter to meet the cat first or just bring the cat home. I also wanted to know if there is anything else I should prepare/be prepared for before I get my new cat.
