HI and welcome, Josh! I prefer what I term the "middle-sized" carrier that my cat can stand up in. You don't need a huge one but it would be best for him to be able to move around. Mine only travel to the vet but I don't want them to feel cramped.
I use old towels or an old bathroom throw rug in the bottom of mine for a cushion. Glad you found these boards!
