I've tied a rattling mouse toy to the end of a long piece of yarn, and tied the other end to the top of a set of doors inside the house that is always open. The door is an odd one; it has one of those locks that goes into the doorframe at the top of the door (it's an old house). My 5-mo kitty never tires of flipping that thing around, b/c she can hide from it on either side of the door and it bounces like crazy. Yarn is bouncier than string.
She also loves chasing those feather toys - they're about $5 US and come with a long feather boa attached to a flexible stick. You carry it around the house or tease her with it and she'll love you for it.
Good luck!
