It's always a good idea to get a new pet checked out by your vet, including Felv and FIV tests, before bringing it in to a household with other pets (and kids). You don't say how old the kitten is, but it may be due for it's vaccinations. If it was a stray, it probably hasn't had any preventive medicine. From your description it could be any number of things but with the litterbox problem too, it might be parasites. You need to see your vet. Many of the parasites can be transmitted to your other cats or even the children.
