I am not a vet, but in my reading and talking with people, it seems as if many cats do well long-term with medication. I think perhaps it is up to the individual cat how well the generic medication works. You could give it a try and then if it isn't doing what it should, switch back to the Tapazole. There are quite a few places where you can get that medication deeply discounted - including people pharmacies! I've heard of folks having good results at Walmart, although the pharmacists usually do a double take at medication prescribed for "Fluffy".

You may need to seek out a feline only vet for more help with obtaining and montioring the medication.
