::I adopted a 4 year old (very large) male cat from the local shelter. He was just neutored yesterday. 2x's in the past 2 weeks has has been sitting on my lap while I was petting him. He did not give any indication of being annoyed and all the sudden jumped at my "neck" and I had to physically get him "off" of me! When I stood up - he jumped back on the couch and tried to jump on me again!!!! What kind of "aggression" is this? I have heard of "petting agression" but this seemed like some sort of sexual agression. Anyone have this happen to them? This cat never bites or attacks any of us in the family at any other time - he loves to be petted.
In the meantime, you'll have to try to read what might be triggering the "attacks" and avoid that stimulous, even if it means not petting the cat. If the behavior continues, a vet check is in order to see if there is another factor at work here. Also the vet might see fit to prescribe some sort of anti-anxiety medication or perhaps refer you to an animal behavorist.
This may indeed be a sexual thing that could diminish as the neutering takes effect - it takes a while for the male hormones to totally leave the system.
