No, no don't put him to sleep. First of all try another vet, see if you can find one that cares enough for animals to let you on some sort of payment plan. It seems as though Smokey isn't in pain from what you say, so I'm sure he'll make it till you find another vet. Another thing you can do is try to get donations from co-workers, friends and family. I bet you can raise enough to get him some treatment. I am unemployed myself and can barely make the bills, but if you have some sort of donation thing set up even I would send a few bucks.
