He's from the shelter, and my vet thought it might mean Lukemia. The tests were negative, and she gave me an oral wash for his mouth. What else could cause the gums to be red? His breath is bad if I forget to wash his mouth out. Otherwise his health is good. He's about 3 yrears old.
Red gums and bad breath are sometimes the indication of gum problems or abcesses under the gums and teeth. Ask your vet about checking for stomatitis. Also, discuss regular dental care with your vet. A dental wash helps, but lots of tooth and gum problems can be reduced or avoided by regular brushing and dental care.
