In Reply to: Cat Emits Odor When Facing Fear of New Dog posted by samia on March 02, 2003 at 19:37:28:
That smell is probably your cat releasing some horomones from her anal glands. Both cats and dogs have these and they are often released when they are startled or very frightened.
She sounds like she must be pretty scared if she's releasing her anal glands. I wouldn't push the introduction issue on her at all, it will happen over time. A puppy is hard even for people to adjust too, much more so on an adult cat. (Imagine a tornado as big as you are asking you to play!) Give her plenty of time away from the puppy and make sure she has something high she can get up on to feel safe. Make sure she always has an escape if she is with the puppy, we don't want her to feel cornered.
:I have a cat that is about a year and a half old now. We just got a new puppy. He is only 9 weeks old. They are both scared of each other, and the few times they have come in contact, I have been close to comfort my very scared feline. I noticed that when she is scared and he is near, she gives off an odor that is very strong but not bad. It is not a bad smell, but very strong, strange, chemical type of smell. Is this odd, common? If you could offer any insight, experience, or suggestions even to help them get along, please respond. Thanks!
