:Hi there!
:I'm German and so far no German forum could help me so I'm turning to you for some tips.
:Robin's (he's 11) kidney values are slightly high so he and his feline friend Mutz are on a reduced protein diet (Waltham's). When I came home with that I thought they were going to ignore it but they greedily guzzled it down. But after a week of the same food they are now losing interest. Today I went and got Hill's k/d but to their taste buds that's even worse.
:I know I have to give them a reduced protein diet but so far no one has been able to tell me what they CAN have. I've had lots of tips about cooking for them myself but I can see myself ending up eating it myself due to the fact that they are not going to eat it...
:Any tips on what they can have? Robin for example loves his cat milk or a piece of bread or quark. I know we can feed fish but I cooked one the first day and on the third portion they turned up their noses...
I don't agree that a lowe protein diet is the way to go, as CRF cats continually lose protein through the urine, which must be replaced. What works well in the diet is pureed raw beef kidney, which acts as a glandular as well as protein source, lots of fat, and lots of water. To encourage more water, add salt to the diet.
You will probably still need to give fluids under the skin, at least until the kidney values return to the normal range. This means that you are not just giving fluids to prevent dehydration, but supplying an excess to really flush out the blood.
