We reciently moved from a house with a covered car port (where our two outdoor cats prefered to sleep) and a garage to a house with just a garage. I decided to make them a cat house so they could still have a home like they had before. it took me 8 hours to build it, and a few hours to paint it.
The cats I built it for have yet to use it because it's not in an area that they are interested in (they actually stay in the garage all day and go down to Reed College at night) but my mom's cat, Pumpkin, loves it. He sleeps in it in the evenings before he comes in to sleep on my mom's head.
The house (which is pictured below, if you haven't figured that out already) is not insulated but could have been. The walls are plastic T-111 siding. Many members of my family have suggested I sell them, but I have no interest in that (school starts next month so I wouldn't have time).
It's kind of a dog house on stilts (reminds me of a lot of the house I saw in hawaii). Materials cost about 60 dollars (if you already have the tools) so I think it's a better deal than one of those igloos someone suggested (not as hard on the eyes either) if you have someone who can make one.
My previous experience in carpentry included two small bird houses that I built in July.
