I've heard of a few cats that could go through chicken wire..So can dogs and raccoons.
If your cat isn't too set on getting loose, you could get away with it if you have a sturdy peremeter fence and check regularly for rust.....
I used 14 guage (rabbit or ferret cage) wire for my own cat's enclosure..cost me a bit more but worth it...The wire made good runways too when I bent it over and nailed it to rough cut boards..
One runway goes from my window to the front enjclosure and a second goes from the front enclosure to another unit out back.
