Less than 2 weeks ago, my precious cat, Dundee, was hit by a car in a freak accident involving a breakaway collar. I will spare you details of the horrific nightmare - bottom line, be very very cautious with breakaway collars. (I am not totally recommending against them in all situations.)
If your cat breaks out of this collar and runs, two things will happen: s/he will be hit by a car or lost without a collar. And NEVER use the breakaway collar with a leash, no matter how 'tough' you think the are and how calm you think your cat is. Even if you are just going in front of your house. I just wanted to get the message out - I've only seen 'pros' about the breakaway collar, not the 'cons', which include safety hazards and concerns. I understand that the incident was avoidable - and must live with this - so please do not reply with judgement.
Just want to raise awareness of the cautions. I have to say I was always aware and even somewhat fearful, but for some reason I thought the worst wouldn't or couldn't happen. This is unusual b/c I am typically an overly-cautious person. Not sure why I didn't address my concerns.....
Anyway, please be careful.
