We brought home a female kitten about 12 weeks old. When we walked in the door, immediately our 3 year old female Manx started hissing. Over the past week, we have kept them separtated. The new kitten lives in the second bedroom. Unfortuantely, the second bedroom in down a hall by itself so the adult cat doesn't need to pass by, so she just avoids it. Whenever we come out of the room she hisses and tries to scratch us, which is VERY unusual.
The kitten doesn't seem to care. She hissed back the first day, but not since. We have been keeping her in a kennel in the living room for about an hour a day. The adult cat hisses and growls then leaves and hides in the bedroom. Also, if we smell like the kitten she growls and hisses then hides under the bed.
It seems like the adult is scared of the litten even though they haven't been closer than 10 feet (through a cage) except for the first day for about 30 seconds.
How can I get the adult cat to warm up to the kitten when she won't get near it or won't be near us when we smell like it?
