Thanks for your insight, you made some very good points. Buford does tend to run off when the girls come over to play. Sometimes I suspicious he just wants to be found. You know how those boys get!

But I will definitely help teach them some cat responsibility. I think it will be good for them. My SIL doesn't want to get any pets yet. She says her house is messy enough! I can understand that but I think having a pet -- especially a cat! -- teaches kids responsibility and empathy. They'll still want to play with him and give him a pounce treat of course. They just love to hear him purr and feel his sandpaper tongue. But maybe we can mix in fun with the responsibility.
