I just brought Spike (5 year old, Male, DSH Tabby) back home today after two days in the Vet's with his second bout of FUTD. The first one was last summer where he was cathaterized, given fluids through an IV and kept for a week that time because he wasn't able to pee on his own after the cathater was taken out. His kidneys were checked and fine but his bladder had stretched because of this and so I was given pills (can't remember the name) to help strengthen it and Hills s/d wet and dry food to increase his liquid intake. I wasn't told at that time that a diet of c/d was needed for life to help prevent another blockage. He bounced back and was his old self again pretty much as soon as he got home right up until a few days ago when the re-blocked occured. Spike was cathaterized again and his bladder was xrayed for stones, there were none, and I was able to take him home earlier than last time with the s/d food for 4 weeks and a prescription of Buscopan and Clavamox (I don't know what these are for). I'm a little bit upset that I wasn't told about the c/d diet that he should be eating after the first time around (he had a different doctor then) especially after this Vet told me that his regular food was most likely the cause for the re-block. He has been visiting his litter often today with only small results, not really any straining but he is just sitting there for extended periods. He is eating and drinking but my concern about his new proper diet lies in the fact that I also have other cats in the house and it's proving difficult to keep their eating areas seperate. It's working fine for the wet feedings but I normally keep a bowl of the dry food out for all the cats to visit when they want to. Should I change this method or is it okay for the other cats to eat some of Spike's dry food as well? He's only eating small amounts of the wet at a time and so I would like him to be able to have access to the dry when he wishes but the other cats are wanting to get at it as well so I'm not able to put any out. I want to do everything I can that's best for him but I'm also fearing another block and at $1000+ an episode, it's draining me financially...and most certainly, emotionally. He seems to be acting fairly normal and not like he's in pain but I'm feeling more and more worried each time he visits the litter and doesn't have a good sized pee. I will call the Vet tomorrow but it's usually difficult getting answers as they are either not available or things are rushed when they are. Any suggestions or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you! Jo
