Softening your cat's stools is a good first step, but don't ues anything meant for humans without talking it over with your vet first. Human meds can harm or kill a cat! The reason softening the stools is important is because your cat probably feels pain when she poops. This may be what is making her stay away from the litterbox. Also you should try to retrain the cat to the box after you've solved both the access problem and the hard stool problem. Just close your cat in a small area with the litterbox, bedding, food and water. Be sure to deodorize throroughly with an enzyme cleaner like Nature's Miracle. Also try Feliway. This is usually for urine marking, but I have had success with the other, more solid, problem
Definitely do something about getting a litterbox with lower sides, or cut an opening lower, or build some sort of ramp so your cat can access it properly.
