Well, Tammy, as you can imagine, food is one of the most adventurous experiences in Japan. I guess my favorite is still tempura (deep fried shrimp & vegetables), which you can order in Japanese restaurants here in the U.S., although it is better made over there. Perhaps this represents my European ancestry, since tempura was originally brought to Japan by the Portuguese several centuries ago. Sushi is the specialty and I enjoy eating that also, but I can rarely eat an entire meal of sushi, unlike my husband who craves it. The only dish I think I absolutely refused to try once was this very fresh sushi served in restaurants with their own little fish ponds. They take this particular fish out of the pond, filet it and serve it to you still quivering (yes!) on the plate. That way you know it is really fresh. This was clearly the most popular dish in the restaurant, but it was too much for me. The other strange thing is that it is sometimes hard to tell fish from pickled vegetables. Sometimes it is better not to know...

Something else that is delicious, however, is traditional Japanese pastry.
