Ellen, what a heartwarming story! Gracie sounds like a wonderful cat. I'm so glad you found her. And bless your heart for helping the rest of her family to find homes. We need more folks like you in the world!
Purrs,
Dottie

:Sometime in July, my husband and I left work around 8:30 pm. We started to drive out of the parking lot and down the street towards home. We heard this frantic crying. We stopped the car (I was driving) and determined that the crying was coming from under the car and that it was a cat!! We opened the hood and found nothing, so my husband took a flashlight (it was dark by then) and looked everywhere under the car. Behind the right front tire, jammed in the wheel, he saw this tiny, gray kitten head. In a panic, we jacked up the car and took the tire off and found Gracie. Her right foreleg was jammed in the wheel mechanism and there was blood everywhere. A positive sign -- she hissed at me! As I pulled her out, she broke free and, amazingly, ran across the street under the bushes. I was sure we had lost her, but we took the flashlight and found her about 5 minutes later against a brick wall. I grabbed her in some paper towels and, after putting the tire back on the car, we rushed her to the emergency vet, about 20 minutes away. They had to amputate her leg, but she survived to become a cherished member of our family (see photo). Voodoo, our resident cat hasn't quite forgiven us, mainly because Gracie loves to lick Voodoo passionately, something she hates. She is just 6 months now and was spayed yesterday. At this very moment, she is sitting quietly on my lap, sleeping like a model housecat, which she is not. We feel very lucky to have her in our lives.

:About a week after we found Gracie, we saw a mother cat and 3 kittens nearby! Since the mother looked like Gracie, we assumed it was her family. We trapped them. The mother and an older sister were spayed and went to live on a farm. We fostered the 3 kittens (all boys) for a couple of weeks and were really lucky to find a wonderful home that would take all 3. They are doing very well, last time I checked. So Gracie lost a leg, but she saved herself and her family.

:ellen
