Two for the price of one actually.
My girlfriend Donna and I were in a pet store and we noticed two itsy, bitsy kittens in a cage near the front of the store. They each fit into the palm of my hand. My girlfriend HAD to have one because they were so cute. I reluctantly agreed to let her have a cat because the price was right. I think it was like $5. Only $5 to make my girlfriend happy seemed like a good deal to me at the time. She selected the more extroverted cat which was shiny black with a white chest and white paws. It was a true pussy cat, purring and rubbing and just real friendly in general. She immediately named him Pandy. The name certainly seemed to fit. Well, before we could leave that store Donna gave another glance back at the other cat in the cage all by itself. One look back at me with those teardrop childlike eyes and I was asking the owner of the petstore if there was a discount for a "2nd cat". "Just take it" was the reply. I knew the guy pretty well and he didn't have the heart to actually make me give him money for these raggedy little things as he knew they would be well taken care of at my house and their odds didn't look too good otherwise.
Well now, the 2nd cat didn't take so kindly to people like Pandy did. In fact, the 2nd cat didn't even want to leave the cage. I suspect that life must have been pretty difficult for these little guys so far and I couldn't blame the little grey, tiger-striped monster for putting up such a fight. We named him "Killa". Turns out they were both boys and we had them neutered pretty much as soon as we could. Well, Pandy and Killa thrived and after a couple of years even Killa became a loving, purring mess of fur in our hands, prefering to sleep on our necks when the opportunity arose. That's not to say that Killa didn't have that "Killa Instinct" in him. One time, just to see what they would do, I paused while shaving with my new electric razor to see if I could scare them with it. They always sat there on the floor like twin bookends watching me shave in the morning which I guess they thought was amusing. So I thought I would have some fun too. I turned the raiser on and waved it through the air like a big flying bug and then had it swoop down on them to frighten them. In an instant Pandy was gone leaving only a swirl of dust behind. Killa on the other hand, in a flash, stood up on his hind legs and took one purposeful swipe with his right paw and sent that raiser flying into the mirror. For the total shock of it I almost didn't even notice the copious amounts of blood squirting from the palm of my hand. Score: Cats 1. Humans 0. Killa wasn't even ruffled. He just sat his butt back down on the floor and continued to observe the mornings entertainment which now was augmented by my frantic attempts to stop the bleeding. Knowing that Killa was this kind of cat helps in understanding my behavior for what transpired next.
Donna and I eventually tired of the cats midnight romp through our bedroom and across the bed. I couldn't believe how loud it was as they ran through the house. There would be a pause in the noise for a split second as they skittered across the bed to insure that we were fully awake to enjoy the fun with them. And then the noise would continue when all eight feet hit the ground running again on the other side. Finally, I had had enough. "From now on, the bedroom door will remain closed.". Donna, have previous experience with cats, strained to subdue her snickering. The cats having felt thoroughly dejected proceeded to dig a whole in the carpet just outside the bedroom door at night. They would start this while we were sleeping and they managed to get all the way down to the wood under the carpet in a few nights. We would eventually wake up to the noise each night and chase them off but they did get to squeeze in some serious digging time before we aroused ourselves to chase them off. Finally, I decided to ambush them. I waited by the door until I heard their claws ripping through the carpet. I swung that door open and there before me was Killa. Sitting there like nothing unusual was happening at all! I gave Killa a smacking on the behind that I was hoping he wouldn't forget. Well, this scenarios played out for about a whole week before I realized that something was not right. I just couldn't understand why Killa would just sit there waiting for a spanking when I swung that door open. So this night, instead of waiting to swing that door open, I laid down on the floor and watch through the space under the door to see what was going on. I was stunned to see Killa AND PANDY come walking up to the door around 11:30PM. Killa calmly sat down in his famous "observation" pose as Pandy proceeded to rip the carpet to shreds. To my amazement, the instant I reached up to put my hand on the door knob, Pandy was off like greased lightening and nowhere to be seen by the time I got that door open. And still sitting there, innocently, like nothing ever happened, was poor ole' Killa.
