Yes, absolutely you are doing the right thing for your kitty. I worked for a vet for seven years, I was even the main surgery assistant for all the surgeries, I saw tons of spays and neuters, right? But I ususally would have one of my co-workers assist when it was one of my own while I hovered outside the door, watching like a hawk! So, sure, anyone who loves their cat is going to be nervous! However, if your vet is a good vet and not a cost-cutter vet, your kitty will be very safe. We never, ever lost a single surgery, even when spaying high-risk animals.
Call your vet and talk to either your vet or an assistant about the surgery. They should be happy to tell you about every aspect of it -- from what kind of anesthetic they use (hopefully isoflurane gas) to what to expect when you bring her home. Pre-surgery bloodwork, like MadameAlto mentioned, is something you can request to be even more cautious, it's never a bad idea.
Just keep her quiet when first bringing her home, they're often a little "drunk" from the pain meds (hopefully your vet uses them, ask!), but the next day she should feel pretty good, especially if she's young. In fact, my cats that were done as kittens I couldn't keep quiet enough, they felt great the next day. She won't change, she'll still be your kitten. Yes, it's always sad when you're dropping them off because they are a scared when they first arrive, but what you see when you drop them off is the worst of it. Unfortunately, the owners aren't around to see when the cat settles down after being there just a little while.
::Hello!
::So I just made the appointment to get my kitty spayed. Now i know it is absolutley nessesary to do this, but i just feel so bad. I have to leave her there all day long in a strange place. Do you think its safe for them? Is there anything i can do before and after the surgery to make her feel better? Is she gonna change completely -- will she still be the cute fun kitten? I must sound so neurotic right now, but she is like my baby, you know!? :-) Thanks for any advice!

: :She probably won't change much and she'll still be loving and cute when she gets home. She may be a little confused at first, but this will wear off quickly. :If you want to read some spay success stories, visit the General Cat Discussion message board. Lots of people drop by for special prayers and **GLOW** and receive it. Then they come back later saying the cat has done just fine. :Your cat's chances of dying from a spay are slim. There is a small risk, it's true, but her chances of dying from uterine cancer or mammary gland cancer are far greater if you don't get her spayed. :Best wishes and good luck to you and your kitty. You are doing the right thing.
:Don't be scared! The odds are in favor of your kitty! Be sure to insist on bloodwork before the surgery, however. This will help cut down on the chance of a bad reaction to anesthesia. It will cost a little extra, but it will be worth it to you!
