Vaccination Schedule Recommendations for Cats
Vaccine Initial >12 weeks 1st Annual Re-
Administration Interval Comments
Feline
Rabies (Purevac subunit vectored) 16 weeks Yes Every three years as Required by law in Texas
Effective March 2003
Alternatively annually with the non -adjuvanted vaccine.
Purevac Muriel non-adjuvanted vaccine is less likely to cause injection site fibrosarcoma. Three year licensing is pending.
Feline Distemper
PLP
(MLV) 8 weeks
12 weeks
16 weeks 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart At 1 year will provide lifetime immunity None needed Duration of immunity proved to 7.5 years. Thought to be lifetime. Longer studies pending.
Non - adjuvanted vaccines are safer
Feline
Upper Respiratory Virus
Rhinotracheitis
Calicivirus
(MLV) 8 weeks
12weeks-injectable 16 weeks
injectable and intranasal 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart With intranasal Every three years with intranasal Kittens may be less likely to sneeze with injectable RhCV. *injectable is only 85% effective in reducing severity of the disease. We have found higher efficacy with fewer side effects by using both vaccines.
FeLV -
(feline leukemia virus)
(subunit)
We Highly recommend testing kittens @ 8 weeks or older for FeLV.
12 weeks
16 weeks
2 doses
3-4 weeks apart High risk cats only None needed.
Age-related immunity is better than vaccine induced immunity
High risk cats every three years.
Cats over 1 year of age are resistant to FeLV whether they are vaccinated or not. Non - adjuvanted vaccines are safer. Avoiding unnecessary FeLV vaccines helps to avoid injection site fibrosarcoma.
Vaccines Not Recommended
We do not use any adjuvanted vaccines
This is our pledge of Safety for your Cat
Chlamydia
or
Feline Pneumonitis
Not Recommended. Most products are highly adjuvanted.
Duration of immunity is only 2 months. Rare disease.
Side effects of the vaccine:
Allergic reactions. Polyarthritis.
FIP
(Feline Infectious Peritonitis)
Not recommended. Each unique mutation is different from vaccine virus. Cross protection is poor.
Efficacy not substantiated by independent studies.
Theory of vaccine enhanced disease. ( Symptoms more severe if cat is vaccinated )
Bordetella
Not Recommended.
Only a disease of young kittens.
Normal flora for adult cats.
FIV
Feline immunosuppressive virus
Not recommended: This is an adjuvanted vaccine.
The predominate Clade of virus in Texas and the U.S. is Clade B
The Vaccine contains Clades A &D. Cross protection is poor.
