You are right it is gross to step in that stuff! The meow chat cats call it a bezoar!

Anyhow, if your cat has not been checked by a vet, he needs to have an exam to determine what might be causing the excessive vomiting. There are so many things that can cause it ranging from food allergies to irritable stomach and bowels that only a vet can diagnose the cat by looking at it and asking you some leading questions.

Good luck! I hope that you will have the cat examined soon so that you won't get any more nasty surprises!
