When there is a group of cats there is sometimes one that gets picked on. Ususally either the most submissive cat or the one that makes the biggest fuss about being chased. Perhaps the group dynamic has reached maturity and he's become that cat. The behavior you describe before he "left" certainly sounds defensive and you said he did it when he was "pestered".

In any case, I wouldn't wait around for him to "come back" on his own. It doesn't look like he will any time soon and there is a chance that he is hurt or sick and that was why he was acting defensive. The longer he stays gone and watches from a distance the more people-shy he will get and the less chance you'll have of ever having him back. I would make a full-fledged effort to catch him, take him to the vet for an exam. I would keep him inside too.

:We have five cats living with us. A mother cat and her four – three year old “kittens”. There are three boys and one girl kitten. They have been together every day of their lives. The four littermates have gotten along well. There has been hissing and chases, but all four co-existed well. Mom was a kitten herself when she gave birth and she was an extremely good mother until she came home from the hospital after she was spayed and hated her “kittens”. All cats are neutered and spayed.

:On New Years Day, one of the boys, a gentle, loving cat and the smallest of the three boys left home. He had been behaving strangely for a few days. By this, I mean he would hiss and hide under sofa or leave the room whenever anybody or another cat would pester him. He is still living at our home (outside), but we only see him every few days and he will not come when you call him upon sighting. I leave food for him and I believe he eats it late at night. When we see him, he looks well, but will not come to us. He keeps his tail down in a submissive way.

:He was so sweet, playful, and laid back. He loved us. We are dumbfounded! Any ideas?
