Nipping during petting...what's that about?

Sometimes while petting my 10 y/o neutered cat he will rub against my hand and then lightly nip my hand or wrist. Why does he do that?

Recently, this began turning into play sessions with my hand. He would nip a couple times, then bite a little harder, then start grabbing and kicking. Since I don't want him thinking its okay to bite hands--especially the hands of little visitors--I am curbing this habbit. Still the nipping is a curious behavior.
