In the future you might try leaving the carrier out in the house, open and feeding the kitten a treat inside and also puting a few favorite toys in there too. If the kitten can go in and out of the carrier freely, this may help him get aquainted. You can also train him to tolerate the car after he has had positive experiences with the carrier by putting him in the car and not going anywhere - just sitting for three minutes with the engine running. Then try a drive around the block and go further and further. When you return home give the kitten a treat.
Hopefully the kitten will stop crying and fall asleep. Sedating a kitten at this young age is risky, so I'd avoid that if at all possible.
