There are a few unfortunate misrepresentations contained in PHMadameAlto's statements. Rabies vaccines and leukemia vaccines were suspected, but not demonstrated as being the direct cause of VAS. Both, in particular the leukemia vaccine, are more reactive and therefore cause more frequent vaccine reactions, generally characterized as swelling, fever, malaise and inappetance.

The newer vaccines are not formulated with reactive-adjuvant. Vets who don't use those which aren't, are probably using outdated vaccines. However, there is no proof-positive evidence, again, pointing to adjuvent. At one time, adjuvent solutions contained aluminum, but that was found to create reaction, but not necessarily VAS.

It must be pointed out that the mapping for vaccines was created for identification purposes, i.e., rabies in the right leg, leukemia in the left, distemper et al in the scruff. Using this "map" enabled the veterinarian to identify the vaccination that caused the reaction. The "map" is a recommendation, only, and it has not been set forth in the medical community as standard practice.

I will withdraw from the discussion at this point so as not to create argument, as occurred frequently in you folks' former habitat. That venue contained many who seemed quick to argue that new evidence and findings were upsetting and evidently insulting. I would just hope that those would be more receptive to changing facts. One point to illustrate, the recent release of the FIV vaccine, which some said, not too long ago, could never be done.

To the first person who raised the questions: The best person to answer your questions is your own veterinarian. You must discuss the scheduling and mutually decide what best suits your cats' needs. Be informed, make an informed decision. This venue appears to lack professional review and commentary, and I fear, misinformation could cause unfortunate, inappropriate decisions that could affect many animals' health and well-being
