:The incidence of VAS posted on the VAS task force web site ranges from 0.01%-0.1%. However our vet said the incidence is much lower and is much more likely to be caused by the FELV vaccine than the rabies. In fact, the 2 cases I have heard of recently from friends were due to the FELV vaccine. Does anyone know where this newer information comes from? There is so much confusion over this topic!
I agree there is a lot of confusion. I would ask your vet where this information comes from. Also, where I live (California), rabies is not a legally required vaccination for cats, and since my cats live indoors only, I don't give it. Do you have that option?
I will say this: Those who claim to "know" the true incidence of VAS, whether they highball the numbers or lowball them, are not right. The only truth is right now no one really knows the real incidence. I suspect it's higher than generally believed, but I don't know either and that's just a guess on my part. Others, with equal fervor, argue it is lower than generally believed.
According to Dr. Wendy Brooks, one of the ways that VAS was identified was because their was an increase of this type of tumor in areas where feline rabies vaccination became a new requirement. It seems fairly clear to me that rabies is implicated, although to what extent, again, I believe no one knows.
Best wishes,
